Keep in mind that even when a small bit of water manages to get in, you could find yourself dealing with serious damage over time. However, improper installation can lead to stucco water intrusion at these points. At these points, flashing and moisture barriers serve to keep moisture out. At various points, your stucco siding will come into contact with windows, the underhang of your roof, and other fixtures and structures. Stucco can provide a very solid barrier, but it can’t cover your entire home. But, it can allow water to penetrate inside and lead to mold and other problems. If your home shifts over time, small cracks can form in the exterior. Once inside, they can cause swelling and shifting that lead to worse cracks that allow more water inside.Ĭracks can develop for many reasons. If cracks develop for any reason, they can allow water to reach inside. Of course, stucco only provides an effective barrier against water when it is solid and intact. If you have sprinklers that are inadvertently keeping the walls wet or any other source of continual water, you could find yourself dealing with stucco water infiltration. It should stand up fine to the elements if the surface is not being kept wet all the time. Once the water does get past the surface, wicking can cause the water to infiltrate very deeply.Ĭonsistent contact with moisture can allow water to penetrate stucco. A variety of conditions can lead to water penetrating the stucco surface directly, which can then lead to an increasing stucco water intrusion problem. Stucco is meant to be waterproof when sealed, but sometimes it does not hold up so well. Otherwise, it will be peeling off in no time.Stucco is intended to offer a solid and seamless siding option that should stand up to water without issue, so how does stucco water infiltration happen? Water can work its way into stucco siding through direct absorption, entering through cracks, or infiltrating improper installations. Whichever coating you use, make sure it’s alkaline tolerant and permeable to water vapor. Other acceptable coatings include concrete paints and stains, mineral paints, lime washes, and “fog coats” of pigmented cement. The patch at this house was covered with a thick, sprayed-on acrylic elastomer that bridges and seals hairline cracks. To do that, you need to apply a pigmented coating over the entire surface. No patch, no matter how expertly textured, will match the color of the old stucco around it. Keep a bucket of water nearby to wash any splashes off your skin. So when working with fresh stucco, wear gloves or touch the mix only with your tools, not your fingers. The alkalis in wet cement can cause burns. Between coats, keep the patch moist by covering it with a plastic sheet. Work in the shade so the stucco doesn’t dry too fast. Hot, dry, windy weather can also interfere by sucking out moisture the mix needs to cure properly. Wait for nighttime temperatures that stay above 40 degrees before tackling repairs. Once water is added, the mix will stay usable for 30 to 90 minutes before it starts to harden.įreezing temperatures can ruin wet stucco. ![]() Too much water will make it loose and unworkable.Add the acrylic bonding agent, then stir in water, a little at a time, until the mix reaches the consistency of buttercream frosting.Shovel the dry ingredients into a wheelbarrow and blend them with a mortar hoe.6 shovels brick or masonʼs sand, slightly damp.
